Manila,
Philippines – Sinabi ni Pangulong Rodrigo Duterte nitong Martes (April 14) na
payag ang Pilipinas na makilahok sa ibang bansa na nagsasagawa ng clinical
trials ng Avigan. Ang Avigan ay isang anti-viral na gamot na galing ng Japan
para sa potensyal na paggamot sa coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19).
Nabanggit
ito ng Pangulo sa kanyang talumpati sa Association of Southeast Asian Nations
(Asean) Plus Three Summit para sa COVID-19 sa Japan, China at South Korea.
“The
Philippines is ready to participate in clinical trials and medical studies of
potential vaccines and medicines such as Avigan. We are confident our
scientists and experts within and outside our region will rise to this colossal
challenge. A vaccine and/or treatment must be found sooner rather than later,”
sabi ni Pangulong Duterte.
Natuklasan
ang Avigan sa pananaliksik sa Wuhan University at iba pang institusyon sa
China. Ito ay ginawa ng subsidiary ng isang Japan-based Fujifilm Holding Corp
at nakitang epektibo sa paggamot ng Covid-19.
Nagsimula ng
maglungsad ng clinical test ang Japan upang masuri ang pagiging epektibo at
pagiging ligtas ng Avigan sa mga pasyente ng COVID-19. Ang gamot na ito ay
kilala rin bilang Favipiravir.
Inanonsyo
naman ni Japanese Chief Cabinet Secretary Yoshihide Suga na plano ng gobyerno
ng Japan na ialok ang gamot ng libre sa mga bansang tinamaan ng COVID-19.
Dagdag pa ni
Suga, may 30 na bansa na ang humiling sa Japan na kukuha ng Avigan.
Samantala,
ayon sa Pangulo, mahalaga umano ang pagpapalakas ng pakikipagtulongan sa
pagsaliksik at paglikha ng anti-viral treatment upang malabanan ang COVID-19.
“Our duty
then and that of relevant multilateral institutions is to make sure that all
countries will have fair and easy access to vaccines and treatments.
Discussions on modalities should be started,” sabi pa ng Pangulo.
“We are
still in the early stages of this crisis… We face the specter of a global
recession,” sabi ng Pangulo.
“Our most
urgent priority is strengthening the capacity of our healthcare systems. We
call for the increased production and the facilitation of trade of vital
medical equipment and supplies in our region. We support the creation of
regional reserves of medical supplies to better equip us in this fight,” dagdag
pa niya.
